NBA Defensive Player of the Year 2019
A plethora of defensive-minded candidates have entered the race for this year's NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, making this a very intriguing battle. Among them are a few established names, including Bam Adebayo and Ben Simmons, while several young players have shown enough to warrant their inclusion in the mix.
Giannis Antetokounmpo
This year's winner of the nba defensive player of the year, Giannis Antetokounmpo, is an absolute force on defense. His size, length and strength combined with his ability to guard multiple positions make him one of the best defenders in the game. He is also an excellent offensive player, averaging a league-leading 16.7 points per game on 48.3 percent shooting, but his defender-friendly demeanor makes him a great asset on the other end of the floor.
Anthony Davis
With his 6'10" frame, lateral quickness and strength, Davis is a terrific defender in the paint. He's a big reason why Los Angeles was first in the NBA in defensive rating last season. Injuries derailed his performance last season but he's back healthy and ready to lead the Lakers this year.
Bam Adebayo
As a second-year wing, Adebayo has become an extremely versatile player on the defensive side of the ball. He's able to switch on and contain smaller guards, as well as bigger centers. He's also an elite post presence, averaging 10.1 rebounds per game last season.
Rudy Gobert
Another defending center to watch out for is Utah's Rudy Gobert. He was named the nba defensive player of the month in March after leading his team to a 23-4 record. He's a generational defender who has won the DPOY three times in his career, and he isn't showing any signs of slowing down.
Mikal Bridges
Phoenix's wing defender was a big part of the Suns' defensive success this season and was one of the top All-Defensive candidates. He was voted to the All-NBA Defensive Second Team in 2017-18 and led his team in steals this past season with a surprisingly strong 1.88.
Boston Celtics Guard Marcus Smart
The Boston Celtics' point guard, who was named nba defensive player of the year this season, is one of the most respected defenders in the NBA. The award is a huge step forward for Smart, who helped the Celtics turn into one of the league's top defensive teams this season.
He was the top vote-getter for the nba defensive player of the Year award and will join Jayson Tatum, Al Horford and Derrick White as a member of the nba All-Defensive First Team this season.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Giannis Antetokounmpo
While there's a good argument to be made that a player needs to be a "big" man to be considered a defensive-minded defender, Giannis Antetokounmpo is the exception to the rule. He's a bruising power forward who can stop players from getting to the rim, but he also has the strength and length to play off the ball as well.
